Course Testimonials:
Read Like a Writer is a class that is designed to help you dig deeper into what you value in writing and the teaching of young writers. As I worked through the assignments, I was able to evaluate my current practice in writing instruction and develop a more balanced framework, using mentor texts to support and encourage young writers.

Read Like a Writer has been the perfect course for this avid reader. My books are full of flags and sticky notes, marking words, phrases, paragraphs and pages that have spoken to me long after the book was closed. Dr. Goiran's class has provided me an opportunity to revisit many of my favorite works and add many more to my repertoire of mentor texts to be used over and over again. Additionally, I was able to create an organized readers log wherein each text is readily accessible and easy to find when I need that just-right text to use for a writing lesson. Dr. Goiran offered many suggestions for different genres of texts, and her encouraging, positive words throughout the course made me feel like a successful writer. I would highly recommend Read Like a Writer for anyone who teaches writing or for anyone who loves to read!

"Read Like a Writer" inspired me to use more mentor texts in my high school English classroom. I always knew that reading good writing helps improve an individual's writing, but this course convincingly demonstrates the concept while providing practical strategies. The course also provided me an opportunity to create a useful database of mentor texts that I continue to consult as I plan my curriculum.
